GMOs: What to Know?

Type the words ‘deformities from GMOs’ into Google Images, and you will come across a disturbing collection of images depicting piglets with severe spinal conditions, rats with bulbous tumors growing from their bodies, and bulls with massive, bulging muscles similar to that of Mr. Universe. These grotesque images will disgust you enough, but reading even further into the twisted details framing the GMO scandal we all face everyday will make your stomach turn.

The reality of the market for GMOs is that you cannot enter into any American grocery store without purchasing a product – food or otherwise – modified by scientists who work under the profit-hungry special interest groups. With the debate on genetically modified food stuffs coming into full swing – boxers in each corner of the ring – you may wonder why it matters so much that you and those around remain informed on the GMO hot-button issue. The fact is: you eat these things. You either ate them at some point in your life or you continue to eat them.

Unorthodox Origins

Even the beginning of this nearly unnavigable road is paved with rocks and debris that gave the American public a false map leading to the downfall of general health. GMOs, an abbreviation for the full term ‘genetically modified organisms’, got introduced into the food market in 1996. From this point forward, the rate of American health problems went on the rise.

The supposed original intent of these modifications were to increase plant adaptability, hardiness, and growth rate. As many scientists saw it, this technology could help the human species survive drought, crop contamination, and other disasters – natural or unnatural. GMOs could help ensure that humanity did not starve to death in a catastrophe.

Genetically modifying these organisms meant combining a source’s DNA with the DNA of viruses, bacteria, animals, and plants. A complicated process to tackle where many things could go wrong, most technicians studying genetic modification suggested long-term studies both on animals and humans as a means of consolidating evidence and education about how GMOs could work for or against the population.

Ever eager to earn extra money regardless of the boundless possibilities for abuse and disaster, powerful industry lobbyists urged the Food and Drug Administration to promote GMO crops and materials to farmers, suppliers, and other links in the supermarket chain. Thus, no long term studies were conducted regarding the potential effects.

Studies: From the Insidious to the Sincere

When it comes to understanding the effects of GMOs on those who consume them, you have two routes of research to digest for the formulation of an opinion. Those study options lie within the realms of independent and industrial. Simply put: the government and consumer market funds industrial studies. This means that the very people who initiated the uneducated and unlabeled distribution of modified food stuffs fund these studies. Meantime, independent studies operated and funded by independent scientists show an entirely opposite range of results from the industrial.

Global Research affirms the following of the industrially funded biotechnicians’ research and technique. These studies often intentionally use aged animals in favor of younger animals with more sensitivity. They collected samples too small to pull any real weight on the experiment’s data. Their animals consume diluted amounts of GM components in their feeds, and the duration of the trials is intentionally limited. Their records often ignore death, sickness, and other disorders in the study animals. The industry-funded ‘studies’ also managed to leave out details regarding the effects of GMOs on:

  • the digestive tract
  • liver and kidney functions
  • immune system
  • endocrine system
  • allergic reaction
  • effects on fetuses
  • potential for cancer growth
  • circulatory system
  • effect on bacteria

On the other hand, independent research and studies show a whole variety of health problems with their lab animals. Mice that consumed genetically modified potatoes experienced intestinal damage. A ninety-day study on rats eating genetically modified corn showed that the animals developed immune responses similar to if cancer or allergies affected them. Rats that consumed genetically modified tomatoes for a twenty-eight day period showed signs of stomach lesions through internal bleeding. At a harvest field containing half genetically modified crop and half naturally growing crop, deer and geese consistently showed a preference of the naturally growing side. Thus, this observation appears to show that animals will likely not consume GMOs if given a choice.

Political Pollution

As more and more American citizens respond in disgust to the unsolicited, uninformed, and uneducated decisions of the special interest groups to tamper with our food’s DNA, more and more truths are uncovered that spell a grim story about the political message these foods send to the general public about concern for individual well-being and constitutional rights. The fact of the matter remains we neither fully understand nor comprehend the potential for disaster, or know how we can avoid ingesting it daily.

As mentioned before, government officials were persuaded to integrate GMOs into the modern supermarket with no research to see what could spawn from these products. The FDA lists no requirements for mandatory labeling on whether or not a product contains GMOs, allowing most of these products to go unfiltered not only by the general public, but the company heads as well.

Not to mention, farmers and livestock producers get the run-around when it comes to discovering whether or not their animals feed on GMO-enhanced animal feeds. Even G.H.W. Bush’s Executive Order claimed that GMOs are ‘substantially equivalent‘ to naturally organic seeds, stating that no need exists for government regulation.

And why do more scientists not try to stop it? Why does so much get into the wrong hands with no real research or studies until it is too late? Maybe the stories of Ignacio Chapela and Arpad Pusztai will give you a clue. These two doctors presented condemning research on the potential for harm from GMOs. They were then threatened, their characters encased by a visual of false enmity.

Eventually, Pusztai was fired from his job for the truths he surfaced. The lack of research, constant lies, coverups, official documents delaying the furtherance of truthful messages, and the vilification of those bearing the truth provides plain and simple evidence of a poisonous power play poised right over the heads of American citizens.

Foreign Fears – Knowing The Facts!

Let us examine the American food market versus the foreign food market. In America, at least 80% of processed food contains GMOs. This figure does not include the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables offered at your local grocery store cultivated in an industrial lab – not in the ground outside.

This also does not include the animal product we consume. Livestock often eat animal feed created through genetically modified grains and corns. The majority of products do not label whether or not they use GMOs. In fact, you are more likely to encounter companies advertising that their food products do not use genetic modification than those that claim to do so.

Now, let us take a look at the rest of the world. More than sixty countries either prohibit, ban, or restrict the growth, production, or sale of genetically modified crops. These countries include many European nations, Japan, and Australia. In fact, whether they instated restrictions or not, the vast majority of economically and technologically developed countries consider GMOs unsafe and unfit for consumption of any kind.

Say NO to GMO!

From seed to plate, we should know if our food was genetically modified (GMO) or chemically treated (Non-Organic). Ninety-three percent of soybeans and 80 percent of corn grown in the United States are under the control of just one company (Monsanto). Currently, four companies control up to 90 percent of the global trade in grain.

Despite the odds family farmers are up against, they still persevere. Each and every day, they work hard to sustain a much better alternative. This is an agricultural system that guarantees farmers a fair living, strengthens our communities, protects our natural resources, and delivers good food for all.

Supporting your local family farmers and farmers markets is key to knowing where your food was grown. Most are happy to tell you exactly how your food was grown and many will allow visitors to their farm if you just ask! Plus, you’ll know your food is freshest since it only had to travel a few short miles.

Nothing is more important than the food we eat and the family farmers who grow it. Always choose organic for all food! Corporate control of our food system has led to the loss of millions of family farmers, destruction of our soil, pollution of our water, and health epidemics of obesity and diabetes. So, let’s agree to support our local family farmers, always choosing organic and say NO to GMO!

Introducing Information – GMOs can be avoided!

Even though it seems that our generations are trapped in the plot of a horrific science-fiction film, we can still create a solution by demanding information for ourselves and sharing it with others. Many different websites exist as information hubs, unlocking the darkened doorways of unorthodox scientific practices and experiments on unsuspecting citizens.

These websites explore products and manufacturers that use GMOs in their supplies, studies that reveal the adverse affects of GMOs, the politics behind the special interest push for GMOs, and how to avoid the consumption of such products. Some examples of theses sites include: Cornucopia.orgNongmoproject.orgResponsibletechnology.org
