Soap: The Mark of Civilization

The question of how societies and civilizations are defined has been a subject of debate amongst anthropologists, historians and philosophers alike. All trying to pinpoint what specifically separates supposedly ‘savages’ from civilized man. Is it agriculture? Technology? Social practices? One of the more accepted arguments is actually cleansing methods, that’s right, cleansing is one of the most distinguishing factors keeping us from descending into outright barbarism.

It was said in Victorian England, that ‘cleanliness is close to godliness’. Using soap is far more than just a physical necessity, for thousands of years, scented soap was a luxury reserved only for the elite of society. Imagine that today where we can enjoy such things at virtually any store.

A Brief History of Soap Making

Even better is that we are not living in the pioneer days. During those times, frontier women would make their own soap by hand. Anyone could do it, with very little training. Back then soap was made from a mix of wood ash and animal fat. This created early version of what we know as ‘lye soap’.

Anyone back then could have made lye soap with very little training. Virtually any frontier wife knew how to do it, it’s just that no one really wanted to do it. The process was fairly laborious, it could take several weeks for soap to become usable. More importantly, it reeked. The process of creating lye soap would create a truly awful stench that no one could shut out. The smell was horrendous and something that even the most frugal of wives wouldn’t hesitate to pay for. Needless to say being a tallow chandler meant good business.

In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, scented soap became more available, although it was a luxury only the elite of society could afford. Often made by combining perfume with the actual soap. Although this was a practice that traces back to ancient Egyptian and Babylonian times, it would be centuries before the process was established enough to make a profitable business. For centuries longer, scented soap was a luxury used almost exclusively by royalty and wealthy lords and ladies.

Soap: The Luxury of Royals

It would not be until the business genius of William Colgate that scented soap became more affordable and produced in enough quanitity for the more ‘common’ people to afford.

Think about that the next time you use your soap, of what an amazing luxury it is. And why use just any soap? Why subject yourself to the harsh chemicals contained in so many products? If you’re going to enjoy the luxury, then why not enjoy the very best?
