Do you suffer from dry, scratchy, or irritated eyes? The problem may not be your eyes, but rather your eyelids. If you have used over the counter eyelid cleansers before, you may be familiar with the way they leave your eyes feeling overly dry or sensitive. Our extra-gentle eyelid cleanser is free or the toxic and frequently irritating chemicals found in over the counter eyelid scrubs.
Blepharitis is a chronic condition usually caused by a build-up of dead skin cells and oily "scales" along the lash line. The scales may be related to dandruff or eczema. In others the blepharitis is related to chronic Staph infections or acne rosacea. If the glands become clogged, the eyelids become red and irritated. Eventually, the quality of your tears become compromised and a dry eye ensues. If the condition becomes chronic, the lids thicken and the glands which secrete the lubrication portion of our tears stop functioning properly.
The lids, conjunctiva, and the cornea may become involved. The symptoms vary from a mild red eye, to an irritated dry eye, to severe corneal involvement. In addition the glands of the eyelid may become infected with a resultant stye (external horleolum) or clogged with hardening of material further back. This non-infectious infiltration of the gland is known as a chalazion. They often result after the presence of a stye.
If chalazions fail to respond to traditional treatments, which can take two to three weeks, then injection with steroids or surgical removal may be advised by your eye care provider. Obviously, prevention is the preferred choice. Clean your eyelids every morning. The use of daily hot compresses can help eliminate frequent styes also. Do not try to "open and drain" a stye on your own. Always seek the assistance of a qualified eye care provider.
Directions for use: Wash hands before cleansing eyes. Use one pump of foam per eye. Gently massage the cleanser over the entire eyelid, paying close attention to the upper and lower lash line. Rinse very well with warm, not hot, water and pat dry. Cleanse eyes each morning. If you have excessive build-up, you may use cleanser as needed throughout the day.
